6-hour first aid course aimed at providing the student with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform immediate care and life saving techniques to sports related injuries and conditions.
Topics covered as follows:
1.1 Role of first aid in sports – Immediate treatment, recognising the need for emergency care
1.2 Primary survey and casualty assessment – Systematic patient approach, the primary survey, airway management to include;
o Airway positioning
o Choking
o Gum shield removal
o Full face helmet removal (e.g. Hockey, cricket, etc)
1.3 CPR – In accordance with Resuscitation Council UK guidelines
2.1 Head injuries – Difference between compression and concussion, the use of Maddocks questions for assessing concussion on the sports side line
2.2 Unconsciousness – Secondary survey and recovery position versus log rolling
2.3 Soft tissue injuries – Wounds, Sprains and strains, when to use Ice and the PRICE mnemonic
2.4 Fractures – Common fractures and their immediate care
2.5 Return to play? – Use of the SALTAPS mnemonic to assist in the assessment of players wanting to continue with the game or practice
2.6 Review and next steps – The course is supported by access to an online learning environment where students can discuss course elements and revisit course content.
